This is a coffee house brand based in Gauteng. In 2021, they hosted a competition for the design of coffee cup sleeves to appeal to South African youth. They also required the look to be relevant to the brand, which has an upmarket, minimal profile. My design was crafted around their logo. The pattern bares an African aesthetic and features coffee beans, smiling faces and a silhouette of the sun.
This was my entry into the annual Pabst Beer packaging contest, which allows designers complete freedom in their submission but restricts the use of colour to red and blue. I normally draw inspiration from African culture, but as this is a Canadian contest, I based my design entry on the influence of four cultures in Canadian history: Viking, French, English and Native Canadian.
Client wanted a colourful coffee cup sleeve, but allowed free reign on every other design aspect. Given this much freedom, I opted to go with a proudly South African design, yet still in keeping with the brand’s more conservative appeal. I took inspiration from the traditional textile prints such as the Shweshwe and Venda fabrics. On closer inspection, you will see the inclusion of a protea on the gold background, and I also added typography elements in keeping with current design trends (2020).
Packaging design for an outdoor rice brand. Catering to the quick easy and organic market. I went for a clean simple look where you can differentiate the types of the rice. The packaging had to have a natural look and this was achieved by displaying images of nature.
